Car Insurance in Bali. What Options Are Available to Tourists?
Freedom of movement in Bali is practically a necessity because of the considerable distances between tourist zones and attractions. There are several ways to achieve it, but the island clearly wasn't built for pedestrians, so the choice usually comes down to ride-hailing apps, transfers of all kinds, scooters, and, of course, car rental.
The last option is often the most convenient, especially if you're used to driving at home, you're traveling with a large family or group, you're not a fan of two-wheeled transport, or you simply value comfort and safety.
Once you've decided to rent a car, you'll need to find a rental service. The island has plenty of them — ranging from barely-there outfits to large, reputable companies. Beyond the choice of vehicles, they differ in service level, technical condition of the cars, and additional options. One of the most important is damage insurance, which in Indonesia, by the way, isn't mandatory — but remains very useful. You probably don't want to get into a minor incident and then have to figure out the cost of parts on the local market, pay damage amounts pulled out of thin air, and negotiate heatedly with the rental company in a mix of Indonesian and broken English.
Road incidents always happen unexpectedly and at the worst possible moment, especially since traffic in Bali is quite chaotic, sometimes defying universal rules of movement and occasionally even the laws of physics. In short, traffic here is very different from what you're used to.
Fortunately, serious vehicle damage in Bali is rare. More common are parking-lot scratches, dents from contact with a scooter in heavy traffic, and the aftermath of minor low-speed accidents.
What insurance options are available when renting a car in Indonesia?
No insurance.
A fairly typical option, especially with small local rental companies. Get into an accident or damage the car, and you'll be paying for repairs out of your own pocket. Foreigners are often assumed to be in the wrong and, according to local lore, fabulously rich — so you'll likely be asked to pay a lot, and the final amount can turn out unpleasantly far from reality.
Basic insurance with a deductible.
Many rental companies include this in the rental price. The terms of this coverage are often fairly vague. You need to clarify in advance the maximum compensation amount, the size of the deductible, which damages are covered, and other important details. Just having insurance doesn't mean you won't have to pay anything if the car gets damaged.
Extended insurance with a reduced deductible.
In this case, your liability is limited to a pre-agreed amount. If the repair cost exceeds that limit, the rest is covered by the insurance company or the rental provider. This option significantly reduces your risk compared to basic insurance.
Full coverage.
The maximum level of protection, where the rental company covers the cost of restoring the car after most types of damage. This is essentially a pricier option for those who don't want to worry about possible scratches, dents, and other unpleasant surprises during their vacation.
BaliMotion offers two additional vehicle protection options: 500F and "Damage-Free."
The 500F insurance works on a deductible basis. For 100,000 IDR per day, you get coverage where you pay for damage up to $500 yourself, and the company covers everything beyond that.
If you want to fully put your mind at ease about possible vehicle damage, it's better to choose the aptly named "Damage-Free" insurance. In this case, there's no coverage limit, and the company covers the full cost of repairs. This insurance costs 320,000 IDR per day.
Either way, both options let you feel considerably calmer on the road compared to renting a car with only basic insurance and not-always-clear risk coverage.
It's also important to know the limitations: insurance doesn't cover theft, any kind of tire damage, or third-party liability. Who's at fault and how much needs to be paid will be decided by the police. In minor accidents with small scratches, it's often easier to settle payment on the spot without involving officials.
For minor damage, it's usually enough to send photos to the rental service, after which staff will advise on the next steps. If the incident is more serious — with the Damage-Free insurance, BaliMotion will cover all costs, including towing. A staff member will come to the scene and handle everything. Besides accidents, the insurance also covers accidental damage — for example, from a tree branch falling on the car during a storm, or cracks in the windshield from road debris.
Your trip to Bali should be remembered for the ocean, the rice terraces, and the sunsets — not for searching for a body shop and arguing about repair costs. Choosing the right car and insurance lets you focus on exactly that, instead of figuring out how to pay for an unexpected scratch on the door.
By the way, it's also a good idea to arrange medical insurance in advance. Car insurance will protect the vehicle, but it won't cover medical expenses if something happens to you.
